I seem to have always known someone involved with a voluntary helpers fund raising store. My mother in law was a keen dog lover and she knitted baby garments for sale to raise funds for the lost dog’s home. One of my daughter’s, mother in law, works for her local community centre store. When my eldest daughter was young, there was no kindergarten in our area, Dandenong South, so the local parents opened a voluntary helpers store to raise the funds to begin our own kindergarten. For a while, I was the manager. We raised money for the building fund from a mix of activities; people donated goods and services or put work or services with us for sale on consignment. It was slow going, low paid per hour work but we eventually got out kindergarten. I was thinking about this as I did a big wardrobe clean out of clothes that are good but no longer fit me. I have a sack full and I will be taking them to ‘the Salvos’. The salvos are always seeking GOOD items for resale to help the needy. Please don’t give them rubbish, it is costing them thousands of dollars a year to take unusable items people give them, to the tip. Below are some guidelines from their own website. Clothing & goods If it’s too good to throw away, give it to the Salvos! Help the environment and your community by donating your quality used clothing, furniture and homewares to Salvos Stores. You'll introduce less waste into the environment and help raise money for our vital community projects. But please be sure the goods you donate are quality. It costs The Salvation Army millions of dollars each year to remove rubbish that has been dumped outside Salvos Stores. Find out more. How to donate
